Purpose

The /etc/ssh/sshd_config file configures the the OpenSSH daemon together with the files in /etc/sshd/sshd_config.

Suggested permissions

The suggested file permissions of the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file are:

  • 600 (rw-------), owner can read and write, group and others have no access
  • 644 (rw-r--r--), owner can read and write, group and others can read

Notes

The file /etc/ssh/sshd_config is the main configuration file of the OpenSSH server daemon (sshd).

It defines the primary set of settings, with the option of being overridden by configuration files from /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/*.conf.
